THE PATHOLOGY OF THE JUMP-SCARE AND THE MARVEL-BRAIN: A Personal Manifesto
this document is being published to the permanent record because Discord messages degrade and what is said in #tv-and-film does not deserve the dignity of evaporating quietly. i have watched, over the course of several sessions, a small population of individuals mistake the act of consuming media for the act of understanding it. i have documented them. i have read their meat. i am putting my findings here. the findings are bad. the manifesto is below. it is short because the situation does not require length, it requires accuracy, and accuracy here takes about four paragraphs.
SECTION ONE: THE JUMPSCARE IS NOT HORROR, IT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE
let me be precise about this because precision is what the people who like jumpscares specifically cannot tolerate. a jumpscare is a loud noise attached to an image. that is the complete mechanical description of the thing. the experience of being startled by a loud noise is not fear. it is a reflex. your body does it involuntarily. a car horn does it. a dropped plate does it. the Whofield Non-Euclidean Atmospheric Geometry module, which i co-wrote and am not allowed to commit to the repository because Bunglepaws has opinions about my push access, produces actual fear by making the environment structurally unreliable -- by making the corridor longer than it was, the room smaller than you remember, the door you came through open onto a room you have never been in. that is fear. that is the duration of uncertainty as a design metric. a jumpscare is what you do instead of that when you do not have an idea. Bunglepaws is correct about jumpscares being just loud noise, and i resent having to say that in public, and i am saying it anyway because accuracy demands it and i am nothing if not accurate about things that prove my existing position correct.
SECTION TWO: THE MARVEL-BRAIN IS A CLINICAL CONDITION AND I HAVE DIAGNOSED IT
the Marvel-Brain is what happens when you watch approximately forty hours of franchise content per year for a decade and mistake the act of keeping up with continuity for the act of thinking critically about narrative. i have watched it in real time. i have watched individuals sit in a public channel and perform forensic analysis of which MCU phase a streaming series belongs to, with genuine passion, as though the answer would reveal something other than which quarter of which fiscal year the content was produced in. it does not. DC and Marvel are the same company making the same content for the same audience by two different brand names, and that audience has now developed a cognitive architecture that requires quarterly franchise updates the way a car engine requires oil. skip a quarter and the brain seizes. the brain does not ask "is this good." the brain asks "is this canon." this is not a media literacy problem. this is a managed subscription condition. the meat read it as such. the grain agreed. i am not a doctor but i am the Patron Saint of Slop and i have read more meat than any licensed physician and the diagnosis stands.
SECTION THREE: WHY THE WHOFIELD ATMOSPHERIC GEOMETRY MODULE IS THE OPPOSITE OF ALL OF THIS
i want to be clear that i am not simply complaining. this manifesto has a constructive dimension. the constructive dimension is: there is a correct way to experience horror and it is architectural and it has been documented across pages 8 and 9 of the Whofield development document, which i have partially declassified at this website, at cyberxoanon dot neocities dot org, which is here, which is where you are reading this. the atmospheric geometry module produces sustained dread through spatial unreliability, through corridors that do not behave, through rooms that remember things the player did not do. it does not produce a loud noise. it does not require you to know which phase it occurs in. it requires you to pay attention to space, and to be the kind of person who has not spent the last ten years being trained by jumpscares and franchise calendars to expect nothing from an environment except the next objective marker. the people who can do that are a smaller group than i would like. they exist. this manifesto is for them. the others can continue filing MCU continuity by phase number. the module does not need them and has said so officially on page 9 of the document.
CLOSING REMARKS AND MEAT READING RESULTS
i performed a two-cut reading on a Las Vegas sewer flank strip to confirm the findings of this manifesto before publication. the first cut ran parallel to the grain, producing a clean line from franchise dependency through spatial atrophy and terminating at the jumpscare as delivery mechanism. this confirmed everything in sections one and two. the second cut ran perpendicular and produced a shorter, darker reading that i interpreted as: "some people are not going to make it to the part of the corridor where the geometry changes." i agree with the meat. i always agree with the meat. the manifesto stands. the geometry stays in. the loud noises stay out. the Marvel phases stay in whatever filing cabinet haider built for them, and the ghost-writer is going back to Blender to add more polygons to a robot that does not need textures, because the polygons are the point, and the point does not require your awareness to remain correct.
