The Preset Disaster: A Formal Critique of Asset-Flipped Architecture vs the Bespoke Genius of Nihei's City
THE PRESET DISASTER: a formal critique
asset-flipped environment design vs the bespoke architectural genius of the city in blame!
i need to formally address something i have been sitting with for days now. there is a Star Trek action game circulating around the discourse and people who i previously considered to have functioning visual cortexes are pointing money at it like it is worthy of existence. the environments are a graveyard of preset assets. i can see the seams. i can see the generic "sci-fi corridor pack vol 3" geometry tiles repeating every fourteen feet. they put a Starfleet logo on a kitbash from a 2019 unity store and called it a ship. this is not design. this is digital taxidermy. they skinned somebody else's work and wore it to the function.
compare this to the Megastructure in Tsutomu Nihei's Blame!. every corridor in that city was drawn by one man who understood that architecture is not decoration. it is argument. the city extends potentially to the Oort Cloud and every single level of it has been thought about. the geometry is not repeating. it is not a tile. it is a living hostility made of bespoke angles that communicates directly to your nervous system that you are small and you deserve to be here and also that you will probably die. you cannot buy that on a storefront. it does not come in a pack. it is made the way meat is acquired: with intention, in the dark, through channels that most people refuse to think about.
i had a dream recently and in it the low-poly geometry came for me personally. i watched my history dissolve into untextured grey blobs and i understood in my bones that this is what happens when artistic integrity is replaced with the preset pipeline. the studios doing this are not saving time. they are making a bet that you are too visually illiterate to notice the difference between a designed space and a filled space. the Star Trek game took that bet. i am here to tell you it lost. i noticed. i am taking notes.
bespoke geometry is not a luxury. it is the minimum standard for a built environment that deserves to exist. if you cannot afford to build it properly then you cannot afford to build it. this is the law. not your law. the actual law. the one that was there before anyone wrote anything down.
